As communities, towns, and cities developed in Missouri, so too did the environmental issues they faced. From soil and waterway contamination to air pollution, resource depletion, and the safe disposal of hazardous waste, Missourians had to confront a variety of environmental problems. In response to these issues, the Missouri Environmental Coalition (MCE) was established as an independent citizen organization devoted to promoting clean water, clean air, clean energy, and a healthy environment. The MCE was not the first group to address environmental policy matters in the region. The Louis Environmental Conference at the Missouri Botanical Garden was the first independent citizen organization created to tackle a wide range of environmental policy issues.
In addition to these organizations, Louis Post-Dispatch cartoonists Daniel Robert Fitzpatrick and Tom Engelhardt used their cartoons to draw attention to environmental issues and concerns in both Missouri and across the nation. Today, the MCE continues its mission of advocating for a healthy environment in central Missouri.
